About Flame Reader
Flame Reader is an independent buying-guide site about smoke alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) detectors and combination alarms for the home.
We write for homeowners, landlords and grown children setting up a parent's house. Most of our readers are replacing alarms that hit the 10-year mark, swapping a hardwired unit or chasing down a chirp.
What we cover
Our guides cover alarms from Kidde, First Alert and X-Sense. We sort them by sensor type, power source, how they link together and what each room needs.
We also explain the parts that trip people up. That means hardwired connectors, sealed 10-year batteries, wireless linking, end-of-life chirps and where each alarm should go.
How we work
We read the specs, the manuals and each maker's own information for every alarm we cover. We check for a UL listing and look at what owners often report after living with an alarm.
Then we turn it into plain guides, side-by-side comparisons and clear picks. Our How we research page explains the steps.
What we are not
We don't make or sell alarms, and no brand pays us to rank its products. Flame Reader isn't affiliated with Kidde, First Alert, X-Sense or any other maker.
We don't claim to have tested alarms in a lab or a home of our own. When we pick something, we say why, based on its specs, its features and owner feedback.
We aren't a fire safety authority. Your local fire department, your local code and each alarm's manual come first.
How the site is paid for
Some links here go to stores like Amazon. If you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
That never decides which alarms we pick. Our affiliate disclosure has the details.
